Exploring Ancient Axum & the Ark of the Covenant Tradition
Day 1: Exploring Ancient Axum & the Ark of the Covenant Tradition
The ancient city of Axum is regarded as the spiritual heart of Ethiopian Christianity and one of the country’s most important historical centers. At the heart of the city stands the legendary Cathedral of Tsion Maryam (St. Mary of Zion), originally constructed in the 4th century during the reign of King Ezana and believed to have been modeled after the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Although the original structure was destroyed in the 10th century, its ancient foundations can still be seen today.
Nearby stands the magnificent 17th-century cathedral built by Emperor Fasilides, renowned for its beautifully painted interior and rich religious heritage. Adjacent to the cathedral lies the sacred Chapel of the Tablet, traditionally believed to safeguard the Biblical Ark of the Covenant. According to Ethiopian tradition, the Ark was brought to Ethiopia by Emperor Menelik I, the son of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon.
Day 2: Climbing to Debre Damo Monastery and Yeha Temple Exploration
After an early breakfast, drive through the scenic landscapes of northern Tigray to Yeha Temple, home to Ethiopia’s oldest standing structure and the remains of the ancient D’mt Kingdom. The Great Temple of Yeha, dating back more than 2,500 years, showcases impressive South Arabian architectural influences and offers fascinating insight into Ethiopia’s pre-Aksumite civilization and early history.
Following the visit, drive to the legendary Debre Damo Monastery, one of Ethiopia’s oldest and most sacred religious sites. Perched dramatically atop a flat-topped mountain, the monastery is reached by an exhilarating climb using a traditional leather rope assisted by local monks. Founded in the 6th century by Abune Aregawi, Debre Damo is renowned for its ancient manuscripts, remarkable architecture, and breathtaking panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
Overnight: Gheralta Lodge
Day 3: Abune Yemata Guh, Mariam Korkor & Daniel Korkor
Following an early breakfast, embark on a full-day excursion to explore some of Tigray’s most spectacular rock-hewn churches: Abune Yemata Guh, Mariam Korkor, and Daniel Korkor. Each church possesses its own unique architectural style and spiritual atmosphere, making this one of the most unforgettable experiences in northern Ethiopia.
The journey to Abune Yemata Guh begins with approximately an hour of hiking before ascending the dramatic cliffs of the Gheralta massif. The route includes steep climbs, narrow ledges, and hand- and footholds carved directly into the sandstone rock over centuries of pilgrimage. The final approach to the church follows a narrow ledge with breathtaking views and sheer drops, offering both adventure and incredible scenery. Hidden within the cliffside, the church features beautifully preserved ancient paintings and a remarkable cave-like entrance carved into the rock itself.
Among the churches visited, Mariam Korkor is often considered the most architecturally impressive. Its vast interior is supported by twelve free-standing pillars rising toward a remarkably high ceiling, entirely carved from solid rock. The craftsmanship and scale of the structure leave visitors amazed at the ingenuity of its creators.
After the visits, continue the drive to Mekelle for an overnight stay.
