We can accommodate our customers with modern tents and camping equipment if no sleeping arrangements are available with a local family.
6 Days trekking in Gheralta Mountains
Day 1: Drive from Mekelle – Mariam papasiti and trek/Walk 4hrs
Drive from mekelle for about two hours to giant sycamore tree camp. We Will View the delight Abuna Abraham rock church, which again requires a good climb in order to reach it; the views both inside and out always making the excursion worth it however. Tonight we will camp under the biggest sycamore tree in the region, a wonderful spot where many of the local exotic birds flock to nest in its branches. Overnight camping
Day 2;Treek to Agoza Camp 6-7 hours trekking hrs
After sunrise breakfast, we start walking in the valley and climb Mountain Kemmer, the highest mountain in the Gheralta range affording 360° Views of the surrounding mountains and desert plateau of Tigray. We will also pass by a tiny rock hermitage carved into the mountainside before reaching our camp in Agoza village, where we will camp in the grounds of the local school, chatting with the villagers that often congregate there. overnight camping at Agoza village.
Day 3: Koraro camp – 5 hours trekking
Our hike takes us up to the beautiful Abuna Gebre Michael rock church carved deep into the mountainside and adorned with magnificent frescos. We then follow the priest down a narrow natural defile cut through the rock of the mountain which leads to our campsite. This is situated in the lee of an enormous natural cave with a sandy floor for our tents. We celebrate with a barbecue of fresh meat and beer brought up from the nearest village, overnight camp at Koraro village.
Day 4: Mariam Korkor – 4 hours trekking
We will drive from Koraro to visit either the world-renowned Abuna Yemata or the beautiful Mariam Korkor rock churches. To climb to Abuna Yemata requiring simple ropes and a harness for one particular point and after the keep trek to Mariam korkor and Daniel korkor those churches are one of the oldest and finest rock churches. Overnight camping with the monks on the top of the mountain. Camping will be on the top table mountain of Mariam Korkor.
Day 5: Mariam korkor – mekelle – Addis Ababa or Axum
After the enjoyable sunrise and breakfast, trek down for about 2 hours from Korkor Mountain and drive to mekelle/Axum Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
